02.16.06 - Improper Bostonian article
You know you're doing something right when your worried that Liam Gallagher is about to punch out your cameraman. Seriously - any schmo can get menaced by some guitar slinging tough guy at the Middle East Upstairs. But when you've got a platinum-selling Brit-pop icon staring you down with blood in his eye, there's a part of you - even while you worry about the safety of your staff - is thinking, "Wow. Not bad."
Annette Narciso, 28, and Dave Gutt, 25, had just that experience this past June while filming Oasis' live set at the Tweeter Center. Their company, Subversion Media, based in Brighton, shoots edits and produces live music videos - all at the behest of records labels, band managers and often the artists themselves. Since Narciso and Gutt formed Subversion in 2000, it has trained its lenses on acts as diverse as Oasis, System of a Down, the Hives, No Doubt, Ben Folds, Ani DiFranco, the Wu-Tang Clan and the Pixies. When asked how it all happened, the company’s founder’s answer is surprisingly simple: “We never expected to be doing this as a living, but here we are.”
After striking up a friendship at their college in the late 1990s, Narciso and Gutt quickly jumped from being kids with a fun hobby – filming local bands live in concert – to young entrepreneurs in demand by major and indie record labels and recording artists across the country. When they met, Narciso was studying the business aspects of the music industry, and Gutt was learning video production; once they graduated, their love of music led the pair to collaborate on a project that combined the skills they honed from their day jobs. Gutt and Narciso cut their teeth filming Boston hardcore and punk shows, hitting clubs together to shoot bands like the infamous local punk vets Tree at the Middle East Downstairs.
The duo’s first few projects were self-funded and served as promotional and experimental tools – shows by bands like System of a Down, Wu-Tang Clan, GWAR and Toadies left Subversion with lots of footage but no income. Narciso and Gutt hadn’t even had occasion to consider naming their hobby; they were still just filming bands in their spare time. But the reel they put together was impressive enough to convince System of a Down’s management to give them a crack at filming one of the band’s shows. That gig was Subversion’s forth and was a turning point for the fledgling company. System’s chart-topping album Toxicity was soon packaged with a bonus DVD that prominently featured Subversion’s work. The album’s sales reached the multiplatinum range and suddenly Subversion was no longer a side project.
Subversion’s client list is remarkably long and varies for a relatively young company. Nabbing an Interpol gig, for example, when the band’s underground buzz was at its peak, was no mean feat. Likewise, Ani DiFranco, who is just about as big as an independent musician can be, doesn’t work with just anyone. And the legendary Pixies? On their unexpected and hugely hyped reunion tour, playing a hometown gig? Who gets the job? The few, the proud – and the persistent and the lucky.
So all of this is what brought Dave Gutt and Annette Narciso to a cozy control booth, sweating as they watched through the monitors Liam Gallagher’s glowering visage approaching their man on stage. Apparently, he was just clowning around, and the notoriously temperamental Gallager’s fuse wasn’t really lit – that time.
The Subversion twentysomethings obviously are doing something right. Take their Ben Folds success story. Their first experience with the piano man led to Subversion footage making up the lion’s share of the live DVD accompanying his live album, Ben Folds Live. When Folds began touring again this summer, he specifically requested that Subversion film his Brooklyn, NY show.
And despite the prestigious notches on their belts, Narciso and Gutt still have their celebrity wish list: Narciso has her fingers crossed for David Bowie, Garbage and PJ Harvey, while Gutt would love to film Nine Inch Nails in performance. Apparently, these thriving young videographers still have a few dreams to shoot for.

01.23.04 - ***SUBVERSION IN THE BOSTON GLOBE!***
Steve Morse, from the Boston Globe, wrote a nice article on the fine operation we have here at Subversion Media.
"One of their main hookups has been with Wind-up Records, a large indie label for which Subversion has shot footage of BoySetsFire (in Philadelphia), Finger Eleven (in Buffalo), and Seether (in Hampton Beach, N.H.). And they've also done an electronic press kit (EPK as it's known in the industry) for Wind-up's fast-rising band, Evanescence.
"They have a real good can-do attitude and are very flexible," says Tony Bruno, senior vice president of marketing for Wind-up.
"We've used their shoots for broadcast TV shows, music videos, added bonus DVD content, regional TV commercials, and online usage," adds Bruno. "We've maximized the footage that they've given us."
